Just when he thought he was going to have one of his best years yet, Steve Rice of SR Farms Alfalfa Company in Wilsonville said one storm brought over 9 inches of rain and another brought hail for 48 straight minutes.
“We cut some hay on May 20 trying to build some inventory and 5 days later it started raining and it hasn’t stopped.”
Now, Rice is left to turn hay customers away because he doesn't have the inventory, especially for customers seeking high-quality forage.
“Unfortunately we have had wet soil conditions and we are a week since that storm hit. We are now just running some swathers in the field trying to clean that crop off and get what we can get and get the new crop coming.”
Rice said the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketing Association is a great resource for hay-seekers.
